Hello writing friends,
Happy New Year!
Instead of staying up on NYE to welcome in the new year, I woke up early this morning (yay, insomnia) and decided to use that extra time to compile a list of top poetry magazines. I’m challenging myself to “aim high” this year when it comes to submitting my work, so I wanted to start the year off with a clear list of what “aiming high” looks like for my poetry submissions.
Luckily, there was no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to poetry magazine rankings. I combined and streamlined two popular lists: Clifford Garstang’s list (which uses the Pushcart Prize) and BookFox’s list (which uses Best American Poetry).
I only included magazines on my list if they were included in BOTH of the previous lists.
Here’s the Top 78 Poetry Magazines for 2024:

If you’d like a Google doc with the list, you can access that here.
If you’re looking for a similar list for fiction and creative nonfiction, I recommend Brecht De Poortere’s list. Also, Garstang produces separate lists for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry here.
Hope that’s helpful for you.
Happy writing & submitting!

PS. I’d love to have you join me for my Literary Magazine Submission Strategies webinar coming up on January 16th. Only $15!
I have placed a poem in three of these, two in the old SASE days--BPJ & Rattle--but not since, and one on their webzine, Columbia. Most of the rest have stubbornly stuck to boilerplate rejections. Many charge reading fees and I avoid those. Rejections get expensive. May editors smile upon your lines in 2024.
Thank you for this, Bethany! I’ve always wanted to combine these lists…but you did it. Grateful! I’ve submitted to many of these or are in the queue. Happy New Year!
